Determining Fit

Finding a well-matched provider promotes a rewarding and potentially life-changing outcome.

The following information details what to expect in a therapy process with me:

Phase I: Getting to Know You

  • Assessing your symptoms
  • Learning background information
  • Establishing goals and treatment plan

Phase II: Actively Addressing Goals (Average 8-12 sessions)

  • Increasing emotional expression
  • Improving your personal insight
  • Learning new ways of thinking, managing emotions, and responding to situations
  • Tracking progress and formulating new goals, as relevant

Phase III: Maintenance

  • Decreasing the frequency of sessions and maintaining your progress

Or

  • Discontinuing therapy and independently maintaining changes
  • Returning for “booster” sessions, as needed

What to Expect:

  • An objective, non-judgmental, and empathetic mental healthcare provider
  • Taking responsibility for your own wellness
  • Learning to acknowledge and release your emotions, rather than fighting or dwelling on them
  • Exploring interpersonal patterns you may wish to change

What Not to Expect:

Clients seeking the following experiences tend to be disappointed with my services:

  • Immediate methods for completely eliminating distress
  • Someone who simply listens, reflects, and agrees with your opinions
  • A therapist who takes full responsibility for your well-being
  • Focusing on how to get other people to change

If this approach seems right for you, please go to the Appointments page to initiate care.

If you have a different process in mind, we do have a number of skilled psychologists, therapists, and/or counselors in this community who offer a variety of styles. Finding the right fit may prevent a frustrating or unrewarding therapy experience.
